Voters Pass Historic Override

Arlington voters approved a $14.8 million Proposition 2½ operating override on Saturday by a margin of 9,666 to 3,775 — what YourArlington reports is the largest override ever approved by voters in Massachusetts. Turnout was 13,508, or roughly 41% of registered voters. According to YourArlington, the override will permanently raise property taxes to fund town and school operations through at least FY2029, and is estimated to add approximately $1,030 annually to the tax bill of an average single-family home assessed at $1.2 million.

Liquor License Expansion Also Approved

Question 2, which allows the town to issue two additional off-premises liquor licenses for package stores, passed 9,336 to 3,775. YourArlington

Election Results: New and Returning Faces

Diane Mahon was re-elected to the Select Board with 9,015 votes; Joseph Solomon won the second seat with 7,978. On the School Committee, Crystal Haynes Copithorne won the one-year term with 4,556 votes over Shaun Berry's 4,240 — YourArlington reports she is believed to be the first African American elected to the Arlington School Committee. Elizabeth Exton, Laura Gitelson, and Paul Schlichtman won the three three-year School Committee seats. Select Board Meets Tonight
