Town Meeting Resolution and Amendments
MBTA Service Improvement Resolution
At the Arlington town meeting, a resolution was put forward, calling for improvements to services provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in Arlington. Paul Schlichtman advocated for the resolution, urging attendees to vote affirmatively, asserting the importance of advocating for transportation services integral to the town’s development and residents’ needs.
Eugene Benson proposed an amendment to the resolution, adding details about recently eliminated bus routes (the 79 and 84) and planned changes to the 67 bus route, suggesting a more comprehensive account of service reductions.
Leonard Diggins spoke in opposition to the resolution, highlighting the complexity of transportation networks and his extensive experience with MBTA-related entities. He emphasized the necessity of collaboration across regional boundaries and suggested that a more constructive approach would be engaging with MBTA officials to work together on improving services, rather than sending the resolution.
The Benson Amendment, which detailed specific cuts and advocated a continuation of bus service on Pleasant Street and requested that the resolution be sent to the chair of the MBTA board, passed with a vote of 152 in the affirmative, 13 in the negative, and 5 abstentions.
The main motion of the resolution, as amended by the Benson Amendment, was then put to a vote and was passed by a vote of 155 in the affirmative, 9 in the negative, and 12 abstentions.
Tabling and Un-Tabling of Articles
Article 64, dealing with funding appropriations from the Fiscal Stability Stabilization fund, was moved to be tabled until after Article 65, due to potential changes in the amount. It was later un-tabled and passed unanimously with appropriations approved. Article 3 was then taken from the table and disposed of as all reports for the meeting had been received.
Dissolution of the Annual Town Meeting
A motion to dissolve the 2024 annual Arlington town meeting was moved and unanimously approved.
