The Clean Energy Future Committee (CEFC) of Arlington, Massachusetts, held a hybrid remote/in-person meeting on May 26, 2023.
- Fossil Fuel Demonstration Pilot Updates
The committee discussed the final regulations for the Fossil Fuel Free Pilot program released by the Department of Energy Resources. Arlington is preparing to apply for this program by September 1, 2023. To qualify, the town needs to introduce a multi-family zoning ordinance that complies with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Communities requirements and revise its Fossil Fuel Free bylaw. The town also needs to provide an implementation plan by February 11, 2024. The committee discussed the definition of “substantial renovation” in the regulations and the need for data collection for the pilot program. - Sustainability Updates
The committee discussed the future zoning overlay district, with a public meeting scheduled for June 8th. The Electrify Arlington initiative was also discussed, which had successful events during EcoFest. The initiative is starting a Request for Proposal process for a home performance contractor and hiring an energy advocate part-time. The committee also discussed the town’s electric vehicles, including two electric buses and the transition plan to become all electric. The need for fast chargers and electricity storage options was also discussed. - Gas Leaks
The committee discussed gas leaks in town, with a gas leaks safari scheduled for June 9th to raise awareness. The committee also discussed the association of water line breaks and sewer backups with gas pipeline replacement. - Creation of Working Groups
The committee discussed the creation of three working groups: transportation, clean energy supply, and buildings. The head of each group will ensure the Clean Energy Future Committee is engaged with related efforts around town and organize group meetings to prioritize Net Zero Action Plan items and report back to the Clean Energy Future Committee. - Next Meeting
The next meeting was initially scheduled for June 23, 2023, but was subsequently moved to June 30, 2023.
The committee also welcomed a new member, Aimee Graeber, who works for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
